Fog, Fog and Fog! Anton, Lori and Sherril have never seen so much fog since we started sailing! On the way out of the Cedar Creek Marina, we noticed a 50 foot sailboat not moving too fast.
- When we passed, we realized it had run aground. Initially sailing conditions were OK with scattered fog, however once we were well into Barnegat Bay, fog became heavier and heavier and visibility of only 100 feet. In addition the wind changed endlessly. No GPS, no radar on board, only a cell phone. - We needed to go back to base. Using the boat’s compass, we sailed west to locate land, any kind of land. Although we found it, we had no clue where we were. Since we could not see any buoys, our chart was useless. With the help of our strobe light we were able to signal a nearby powerboat. - We learned that we were in shallow cove and needed to move back into the treacherous Barnegat Bay and sail north. We passed numerous creeks, but we could not tell which one was ours. - After passing and island with flags, we called our marina and learned we were on a good tack. Our creek was fortunately north of this island. We took the next creek, although we could not see it was ours, fog was just too thick. My lucky ladies were with me and we made it safely to our marina. My next trip is to the GPS store. - If anyone still wants to go sailing with me, call Anton Van-Zevenbergen Cell: 1-609-235-7609 - PS: We part from Cedar Creek Marina, Bayville, New Jersey and SAIL on Barnegat Bay. - |
